Ahmad Shahi School & Vance Chapman Public School
The School
The Ahmad Shahi School is located in central Kandahar City and has about 250, mostly female, students. There is no playground.
As the electrical supply in Kandahar is quite limited, most days, the students lack sufficient light to learn. Lighting is so bad in three of the classes, it is difficult for students to see writing on the black board, and impossible to read their text books.
The Students
The students are drawn mostly from extremely poor areas of inner Kandahar City. They are very enthusiastic about their education, and study very hard without the benefit of proper lighting, books, pens and pencils.
The Teachers
They are very bright and motivated, though most lack formal training. Some speak good English, and all are extremely motivated. They are extremely brave and badly paid, and ensure that girl students have the same opportunity and their male counterparts.
The Need
The condition of the school is relatively good. The blackboards need to be repainted, and water system repaired, but these are minor things. There is an critical need to provide some sort of solar lighting system to three of the classes, and to provide, laboratory equipment, stationary and textbooks.
The Match
Students, teachers and parents from Vance Champman Public School from Thunder Bay, Ontario has partnered with Ahmad Shahi School.
